Pendants with eagles and parrots were common in Spanish jewelry from the mid-16th century into the 17th century; one example dated 1561 appears in the Llibres de Passanties del Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona. Parrots might have a baroque pearl swelling into its breast, while in the present case, a stunning pear-shaped emerald fills this function. The scrolled perch of the eagle makes a classical reference, while the diagonal white champlevé lines on the body of the eagle suggest fine plumage and contrast with the touches of color on the throat and dependant feathers, on the one hand, and the round white forms of the cloud of eight hanging pearls on the other.
Although Yvonne Hackenbroch dated the work to the late 16th century, the emphasis placed on the jewel, the insistent three-dimensionality of the body of the bird, and the dynamism of the enameled lines of the feathers, especially on the reverse, suggest a date in the 17th century. MB

Los pinjantes con águilas y loros fueron corrientes en la joyería española desde mediado el siglo XVI hasta bien entrado el XVII; en los Llibres de Passanties del Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona se ve un ejemplo fechado en 1561. Algunos loros tenían una abultada perla barroca en el pecho, mientras que aquí desempeña esa función una magnífica esmeralda piriforme. La percha enrollada del águila es una referencia clasicista, y las diagonales blancas de esmalte campeado sobre su cuerpo sugieren un bello plumaje y contrastan con los toques de color en el cuello y en las plumas colgantes, por una parte, y las formas blancas redondas de la constelación de ocho perlas por otra.
Yvonne Hackenbroch dató esta pieza en el siglo XVI tardío, pero el acento puesto en la piedra preciosa, la insistente tridimensionalidad del cuerpo del ave y el dinamismo de las líneas esmaltadas del plumaje, sobre todo en el reverso, sugieren que pertenece al siglo XVII. MB
