The Hispanic Society’s collection of 18th-century ceramics includes nearly one hundred works from the Royal Ceramic Factory of Alcora. Located in the region of Castellón de la Plana in eastern Spain, the factory was founded in 1727 by Buenaventura Ximénez de Urrea, Abarca de Bolea (1699–1742), 9th Count of Aranda. For over 150 years, the factory produced decorative and luxury ceramic ware for private homes, monasteries, and royal palaces throughout Spain. The wares rapidly acquired a reputation for high quality and were exported to France, Italy, Portugal, and the Americas.

The ceramic workshop of Alcora was perhaps best known for its fine painted scenes, many of which were executed on plaques of varying size. Designed to be hung on a wall like small paintings, plaques depicted a wide variety of religious, mythological, or allegorical scenes. The factory described these plaques as láminas, the same term used to describe copper plates for engravings; although the images themselves were also called miniaturas. The workshop clearly had access to a large number of quality prints since numerous images on Alcora pieces were based on engravings.

This delightful plaque illustrates one of the more amusing scenes from the Temptation of Saint Anthony. The image is based on a detail of Jacques Callot’s etching The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1635). The struggle of good and evil is vividly represented, as grotesque demons in human and animal forms, some with wings, taunt the chained Saint Anthony who is shown outside his cave raising a large cross in his right hand. In the foreground, a demon torments Saint Anthony’s pig with a bellows. Typical of plaques from this period, the composition is framed with a string of bead-like ovals with stylized green and yellow flowers on blue ground. On the reverse side of the plaque is the mark “CQ,” the initials of the unidentified artist who painted the image. MCM

MCM
