Bird motifs of this type are relatively common in Spanish ironwork, especially in collections associated with Eastern Spain. Pedro Miguel Artíñano y Galdácano and Luis Pérez Bueno both point out the popular arts aspect of the bird figure, as they assign dates in both the 15th and 16th centuries. In the present example, the animating punch work, including the almost fingernail-like semi-circular forms creating the bird’s plumage and the semi-circle and dot forms running along the edge of the back plate, suggest a blacksmith with a keen eye for detail.
