DescriptionCream color silk square shawl with polychrome silk floss, finished around the perimeter with partially knotted cream silk fringe. Ground fabric measures 62.75” selvedge to selvedge. Pictorial design is composed of four scenes with people (male and female), structures (houses), flora and fauna. The scenes opposite each other diagonally are the same, with variations in the colors of each individual element, such as people’s clothing, bird plumage and flowers. Scenes are connected by small joining scenes along each side. All women have black hair that is styles similarly. Men have black caps, with 2 (1 in each repeating square) figures wearing a straw hat, 2 – a distinguishing blue and red piece and 2 others not having a head cover with the tops of their heads painted blue (these last 2 are in the joining scenes. There is a border of a blue and a white stripe outlining the central design. The outer border is composed of flowers and butterflies, mirror imaging at the center of each side and identical on all four sides.
